Overview :
Located on the western coast of India in the coastal belt known as Konkana,
the state Goa is one of the most visited tourist places in India. It is
bordered by the state of Maharashtra on the North and the state of Karnataka
on the south and east. The vast expansion of Arabian Sea on its west makes a
magnificent coastline for which Goa is famous. For long time it was a colony
of Portuguese and and was liberated by Indian Army in December 19, 1961 and
became an Union Territory. In the year 1987, it got its statehood and became
the 25th state of Indian Union. Also known as the Pearl of the Orient,
Goa attracts tourists for its unending scenic beauty palm fringed beaches,
architectural beauty of its temples, churches, Portuguese buildings and a
rich culture.

» Beaches of Goa - The coastal line of Goa is
dotted with a number of beautiful beaches which enchant its tourists with
its picturesque beauty and various beach activities. Beaches of Goa are much
popular than any other beaches of India in terms of the facilities they
provide. Some exotic cuisine, water sports add pleasure to this place which
make it one of the most sought beach holiday destinations in India. Some of
renowned beaches of Goa are : Anjuna Beach, Arambol Beach, Colva Beach,
Calangute Beach, Benaulim Beach to name a few. One can also participate in
the beach parties and enjoy shopping in the beach side shops.

Churches of Goa - There are several churches built in the late 16th and
17th century by Portuguese represents Portugal architecture style and a rich
history of the state associated with it. Basilica of Bom Jesus church built
in 1605, is a major pilgrims for Christian community. Among other churches,
the Goa Se Cathedral Church dedicated to St. Catherine, Church of St.
Francis, Church of Lady of Rosary and the Church of St. Cajatan attract lots
of people.
» Temples of Goa - A tour to Goa takes you several
temples built in the early medieval period attract both Hindu and Christian
pilgrims. The Mangeshi Temple at Priol, the Shanta Durga Temple at Kaveli,
the Ganapati Temple at khandole, the Mahalaxmi Temple at Bandewade are some
of the most prominent and oldest Hindu temples in Goa.

Fairs & festivals of Goa :
Goa celebrates a number of festival all around the year. Generally, the
festivals of Goa are celebrated at the renowned temples and are dedicated to
local deity. Music, dance and various rituals are major features of each
festival. Some of the festivals that are celebrated with pomp are : the
Chovoth or Ganesh Chaturthi, Gudhi Padwa, Bonderam Festival, Christmas, Sao
Joao Festival, Easter, Shigmotsav, Food & Cultural Festival & Goa
Carnival. Besides, all the popular & national festivals of India are
also celebrated with much fanfare and enthusiasm.
Shopping :
Goa can also be called a shopping paradise for its innumerable shopping
items. Its excellent local handicraft items including carved furniture,
brassware, terracotta, shell work etc are available at all Government
Emporiums and also at shops and stalls near every tourist spot. Several
local markets in every villages also provide numerous variety of items and a
glimpse to its ethnic culture. The Friday Market at Mapusa and the Anjuna
Beach Market are two of the best places in Goa where one can buy souvenirs,
beachwear and handicraft items at a very reasonable price.
