
Sikkim
the land of spectacular snow clad mountain trails, rich flora and fauna is
also known for its ancient old monasteries or Gompas. The monasteries of
Sikkim constitutes an important part of the cultural heritage and lifestyle
of the people of Sikkim. There are around 200 monasteries belong to Nyingma
and Kagyu of Buddhism reflecting the ancient Buddhist legends. These
monasteries attracts pilgrims and tourists on a a large scale from all parts
of India. Following are some of the well known monasteries.
» Pemayangtse Monastery - Situated at a distance of
140 kms from Gangtok in the western part of Sikkim, it offers an impressive
view of Mount Kanchenjunga. Built in 17th century, it belongs to the Nyingma
order. The monastery houses several ancient religious objects including some
wooden sculptures.
» Rumtek Monastery - This is one most important
Buddhist pilgrimage places in Sikkim. The monastery possesses some of the
most valuable ancient manuscripts and icons related to Buddhism.
» Enchey Monastery - It is located at Gangtok on a
hilltop and was built during the rule of Thutob Namgyal. This 200 year old
monastery houses many images of god and goddesses and religious texts within
its complex. A masked dance known as Chaam held every year in the month of
January and the annual festival are the prime source of tourist attractions
of this monastery.
» Phensang Monastery - Built during the reign of
Jigme Pawo, the monastery is located in the northern part of Sikkim. It is a
major religious spot for the Lamas. The annual festival of the monastery
celebrated in the month of December attracts pilgrims on a large scale.
» Phodang Monastery - Located at the northern part
of the Sikkim, the monastery is about 28 kms from the capital city Gangtok.
The religious dances are its prime attractions of the city. The monastery
also houses many old mural paintings depicting various religious aspects.
