Overview :
Located on the foot hills of the Kumaon region of the state Uttranchal, the
Jim Corbett National Park is known for its tiger population. It was a
popular haunting ground for British and named after the legendary
hunter-naturalist Jim Corbett, who contributed a lot in setting up this
park. The park was established in August 1936 with the help of world
wildlife fund and was earlier known as the Hailey National Park. In the year
1973, the park became a part of the Project Tiger Scheme to preserve the
endangered tiger species.
Entry Fee :
The park administration in Ramnagar gives permission to enter the park. It
charges a Rs of 350 per person and is valid for only two nights. Charges for
boarding, lodging, jungle safaris and the entry fee of movie camera are
additional.
Wildlife Attractions :
» Flora in the Park - There are around 110 tree
species can be found in the park and the majority of vegetation comprises of
Sal trees. Some other plant species of this region includes the Chir,
Anauri, Bamboo, Bakli and Lantana.
» Fauna in the Park - There are around 50 mammal
species and some of the major ones consists of tigers, leopards, elephant,
wild dog, jackals, civets, porcupines, wild boar, sloth bear etc. Its vast
stretches of Savannah grasslands is a perfect home to chittal, deer, sambar
and other four horned antelopes.

Avi-fauna in the Park - The park has also an interesting range of bird
species that numbers over 580. Some of them are the herons, darters,
flycatcher, fishing eagle, ducks, geese, cuckoos, barbets, peacocks,
kingfishers, moorhens, hornbills, jungle fowl, vultures etc. The nearest
Ramganga river also attracts a variety of winter migrant birds.
Trips within the park :
The park provides the facilities for elephant safari and jeep safari which
are two of the best ways to spot tiger and other wildlife in their natural
habitat while roaming inside the dense forest of the park. Tourist lodges
and travel agencies also provide rented jeeps for the park trips.
Accommodation :
A range of tourist accommodation within Corbett is at Dhikala available at
Dhikla in forms of dormitories, forest rest houses, huts. Accommodation is
also available at private hotels and resorts in Ramnagar. Some of the well
known resorts near Corbett are : the Corbett River Side Resort, Quality Inn
Corbett Jungle Lodge, Infinity Resort, Corbett Ramganga Resort etc.
Getting to the Park :
» By Air - Phoolbagh, Patnagar is the nearest one
and is at a distance of 50 km. The Delhi Airport is the nearest
International Airport.
» By Rail - The nearest railway station is at the
town of Ramnagar and is on the broad gauge track. It is linked to Delhi,
Lucknow and Muradabad.
» By Road - A good road network connects Ramnagar
with Nainital, Ranikhet, Delhi, Dhikla and some other destinations of North
India by frequent bus services.
