Overview :
The sanctuary is located on the bank on the banks of the Vembanand Lake in
the village Kumarakom. Spreading over an area of 101 sq-km, it is renowned
for its varied avian population, including a variety of migratory birds.
Kumarakom is an exciting backwater destinations that offers its tourists a
unique experience for its rich wildlife in the sanctuary and the picturesque
beauty of mangrove forest and swaying palm trees.
Wildlife Attractions :
Avi-fauna in the Park - The sanctuary is home to a rich variety of bird
life like a local varieties of waterfowls, Kingfishers, woodpeckers, cuckoos
and owls, as well as the migratory Siberian Cranes, egret, darter, heron and
teal, which can be viewed here during the months of December to February.
Trips in the Park :
Kumarakom Sanctuary offers boating trips on the picturesque Vembanad lake
by the traditional houseboats, Kettuvalloms. A boat trip is the best way to
observe the rich bird life of this region. Also one can enjoy fishing
facilities at the lake of the sanctuary. Motor boats are also available for
bird watching cruises.

» By Air - The Cochin International Airport is the
nearest one, which is at a distance of 70 kms from the Muhamma boat jetty.
» By Rail - The nearest Rail head is at Kottayam
which is connected to all the major cities of India by several express
trains.
» By Road - Kottayam is 14 km from Kumarakom and
connected to rest of the country of India by both State Highways and
National Highways. From here taxis and auto rickshaws are available for
reaching the sanctuary.
